What does on-duty time NOT include?

On-duty time typically refers to the hours a driver is actively engaged in work-related activities. This includes driving, as well as time spent on inspections, repairs, and other activities directly related to operating the vehicle safely.

When considering what does not count as on-duty time, waiting at a rest stop for extended periods generally falls outside of this definition. During these waiting times, the driver is not actively engaged in any driving-related tasks, inspections, or servicing and is instead in a state of inactivity, which does not contribute to on-duty hours.

In contrast, traveling as one of two drivers while not in a sleeper berth does count as on-duty time, as does the time spent inspecting or servicing the vehicle. Recognizing these distinctions helps ensure compliance with regulations regarding driving hours and rest periods.
